Here's Why You Might Need a Career Coach (Even If You Think You Don't!)
I recently read a comment from a woman on Glassdoor talking about the job search market for HR professionals and her lack of success. She stated she applied to over 100 positions and had only four interviews. As I always do, I suggested that she contact her local American Job Center and work with a professional Career Coach who could provide her with support to help her navigate this tough job market. And she said, "I already know what I want to do and how to job search. I don’t need a Career Coach." Her answer is my focus today.
Let's bust a myth: Career Coaches aren't just for career newbies.
Many people think of career coaching as something for recent graduates or folks who are in career transitions. But here's the truth: it's for anyone who wants to level up their job search game. It's about getting the support you need, so you don't have to tackle the job hunt alone.
What can a Career Coach really do? (Spoiler: It's more than you think!)
At Workforce Buffalo, we see the magic of strategic career coaching every day. Here's how we make that happen (and yes, it's all FREE!):
- Help identify employers and connect you with hiring managers.
- Create impactful résumés, unique to your goals, skills, and experience.
- Polish your online presence and make a powerful first impression.
- Build a personalized roadmap to achieve your career goals.
- Craft an “elevator pitch” that gets you noticed.
- Explore training options based on your career goals.
- Be your accountability partner and keep you on track.
- Help you develop accomplishment stories that highlight your value.
- Develop interview strategies to help you nail those tough interview questions.
- Provide mock interviews tailored to your specific career field.
- Coach salary negotiation strategies.
Think of us as your personal career cheerleader.
Once, when I was in graduate school, I met an author in a self-improvement section of a bookstore. He made a comment that he only ever met leaders and future leaders in that section, people who constantly pushed to be better. That is how I see career coaching. We know you've got the talent; we're here to help you unleash it.
Don't let "I know it all" hold you back!
Seriously, even a rockstar needs a coach. Don't let your assumptions stop you from getting the support you deserve. Your dream job (and dream paycheck) is waiting! Contact us at the SUNY Erie Career Centers at 716-270-4444, or the Workforce Buffalo Downtown Career Center at 716-856-5627.
