As a result of New Era Cap Company closing its
Buffalo factory, up to 230 workers are now looking
for new employment. In an effort to help link these
laid off workers with new job opportunities, BETC
and WDC’s Business Services Unit worked together to
coordinate a targeted Job Fair that was held at BETC
on October 15, 2004.
WDC’s Business Services Unit reached out to local
manufacturing companies that would benefit from
hiring these trained workers and the following
companies participated in the Job Fair: Big Bear,
AccuMed Technologies, Double Eagle Embroidery,
Rosina Foods, McKesson Drugs, Held's Janitorial
Services, TMP Technologies and Niagara Ceramics.
The event was extremely successful, linking over
90 recently laid-off New Era Cap employees with
these companies. BETC will continue to work with
WDC’s Business Services Unit to maintain contact
with the employers, tracking interviews and hires.
Special thanks to Joe Sullivan and the rest of
the staff from BETC, Business Services and our
Partner Agencies! They did a great job calling the
laid off workers to invite them to the Job Fair,
providing training in Resume Writing, staffing the
sign-in desks and providing tours of BETC to “first
time” visitors. We also received a great deal of
help from former New Era Cap employee Vanhny
Kanhalangsy (Voni) who provided translating
assistance during the Resume Writing sessions and at
the actual Job Fair.
